Periodontology (or) Periodontics is the branch and scince of dentistry which deals with the study of supporting structures of the tooth and the diseases and diagnosis and treatment of these structures.
The Periodontium (or) the Periodontial ligament is the main supporting structure surrounding the tooth, this is why the name periodontology. But it also deals with the other supporting structures of the tooth like the Gingiva, cementum and the bone.
