Scientists are very close to make Root canal Treatment a thing of the past by using latest novel technology which will help in regenerating infected and damaged Pulp Tissue. The Study “RvE1 Promotes Axin2+Cell Regeneration and Reduces Bacterial Invasion,” done by Scientists at Forsyth appeared in the Journal of Dental Research. According to the Research, Resolvins such as Resolvin E1 (RvE1) has been found to help regenerate pulp tissue which can potentially remove the need of Root Canal Treatment in the future. With Resolvins produced by the body to control excessive inflammation associated with disease and are part of Specialized Preresolving Mediators (SPMs).
The Scientists during the Study applied the RvE1 mediators to the Infected pulp tissue at various levels of infection to see how the the diseased pulp responds to RvE1 and to see the Regenerative and Anti-inflammatory reaction. RvE1 is seen to help in formation of certain Stem Cells which can differentiate into Dentin, Bone Cartilage or Fat which not only can be applied to Infected Tooth but also to multiple regions of the Body for regeneration of damaged tissue.
The 2 major findings in the study on applying RvE1 to diseased Pulp tissue were –
- RvE1 was very effective when used as Direct Pulp Capping material of Vital Pulp Tissue in Decayed teeth, where the Pulp Tissue was found to Regenerate in its presence and this study helped in identifying the Tissue Regeneration Mechanism.
- When RvE1 was exposed to Severely Damage or infected Pulp Tissue (Necrotic) where it was not as effective as with Vital Pulp Tissue. But the findings showed that Inflammation and rate of Infection was reduced considerably when coming in contact with RvE1, stopping the Non Vital pulp to turn into an Abscess.
But According to one Study when Infected Root canal tooth was Cleaned before RvE1 was applied, it showed Regeneration of Pulp Tissue surprisingly.
Dr. Van Dyke explained, “because application of RvE1 to dental pulp promotes formation of the type of stem cells that can differentiate into dentin (tooth), bone, cartilage or fat, this technology has huge potential for the field of regenerative medicine beyond the tissues in the teeth. It could be used to grow bones in other parts of the body, for instance.”
The Scientists main goal of the research is to see how RvE1 reacts and whether it has the ability to Regenerate Pulp tissue at various stages of Pulp Damage. Root Canal Treatment is needed in teeth where the Pulp Tissue is diseased and Non-Vital caused due to Decay in Enamel or Dentin, Fracture of tooth, etc. This leads to weakening of the tooth structure and increases the risk of Tooth Fracture in the future. So if this study helps in Regeneration of the Pulp Tissue in various stages of Damage the Tooth can be kept alive and the need for RCT is eliminated.
